Do not put in the new plugs and then ride to the test area, it kinda defeats the whole purpose. This is the way I do it, and it is really the only way I ever read about how to do a plug chop. Get new plugs and put them in your pocket.

When you chop your throttle and hear a little mis, pop or inconsistent sound you are usually lean, if it sounds like its not a nice crisp sound and you see blue smoke when accelerating its rich.

However, with more complex carburetors (such as the Dellorto PHBG), this technique on its own will not suffice since it mainly gives information relating to the mixture at WOT while the mixture at other throttle openings can still vary widely.
